QA engineer, eighteen years, most of them in enterprise software where the release goes out whether or not I am happy. I started as a manual tester writing test cases in Word documents and I still think that period taught me more than the automation did — you learn what actually breaks by using the thing badly on purpose. Now I mostly build test infrastructure and coach developers to own their own suites, which is a slower way to get a better outcome. I write a lot of documentation. I am suspicious of any suite that has never failed.
